Railing
« on: January 22, 2021, 06:23:07 pm »

Hi,I'm having some challenges installing my railings on the Fairmount Alpine. My idea was to temp glue the stanchions in place and then pull the small copper wire through them. Then I would solder the wire in place. After I would remove the complete pice and spray paint then re install the railing.Problem I am having is I can not keep the copper tubing from bending as I feed it through the small stanchions holes. Is there another method to do this? Enclosed is a pic of the work so far.Keep in mind everything is mostly temp.Suppose I could attempt to straighten the wire before I paint. ;)

Regards Mike  fourth attempt to download not working. >:-o

You might be better using brass wire and solder paint.

The solder paint isn't cheap but it makes things a heck of a lot easier.

Hi Mike
The copper wire a nighmare to get stright. Like Colin said get your self some 1 meter lengths of brass rod. You can get 0.3mm
 and bigger sizes.
Use flux my self I prefer decent flux I use plumbing flux. Then I use solder paste. This means you can very easily control how much solder each joint gets.
Then solder them up. Afterwards a wash the hand rails in bole of boiling water a a drop or two of washing up liquid. This will remove flux resadue. If you dont the brass will corride.
Done several 1:100 ferries this way.

You could try to stretch the copper wire slightly, this straightens it, works for brass wire anyway.

Brass wire stays straight and stiff (un-annealed), copper wire just wants to go bendy.
