Wavemaster 34
« on: July 14, 2021, 10:45:45 am »

Hi All
Well I had a senior's moment and with glassy eyes I bought an old kit from E Bay !!

The box arrived with no problem all the way from ye old England.

Dam cheaper than postage within Australia !!!

The box was very well package, but the nightmare started.

No plans, two bulkheads missing and the keel was a piece of delaminated plywood.

As for the bulkheads also delaminating and the stern bulkhead had a serious twist in it.

After a total workout of what I had, it was on to the internet thingy to find some HELP !!

The Lads from Mayhem come thru with a pictures of the plans and of the boat.
THANK YOU EWE ALL !!!

So it was time to start this project or go back to other projects ??

I decided it was not going to bet me !!!

So all new bulkheads and save the stern one .

The wheelhouse/cabin sides are in good condition which will be my base for the boat.

Hi All
Had the lads on the job today !!

Removed the twist out of the stern bulkhead.

Redesign bulkhead 4 and design up bulkhead 5 which was missing.

Bulkhead 4 is going to have a doorway into the rear cabin, but no windows.

Lots of masking tape holding it all together !!!

The lads pack up early as it's winter in Tasmania.

Hiya Harry,

At first glance, the wood doesn't appear that bad.
The lads have certainly been busy haven't they, it actually resembles a boat shape now.

I'm sure you'll beat it and it'll be a nice model buy the time the lads have finished, even with Taz working hours.

Looking forward to seeing the end product and how well it performs.

Hi All

Well it's time to glue some bits together starting with bulkheads 3 and 4.

Bulkhead 3 has been modified by cutting out a new one with the center section between the cabin sides removed down to a lower wheelhouse floor level.

I lowered the prop angle of this.

Moved the center section of bulkhead forward to have doors into the forward cabin.

Bulkhead 4 was angled back a bit with the top section of the rear cabin added on.

This will have a door into the rear cabin, but, no windows.

I roughly sat the 540 motor in position to see if I had some motor clearance ??

Next will be more work on the stern section as bulkhead 5 which was missing is still not spot on!!!

At least I saved the stern bulkhead and the  rear cabin double window section.

Hi All

Well chaps, I made up a keel from the old plywood from the kit (to be replaced) and the missing bulkhead number one.

After a few goes at bulkhead 1, I work out that B5 still is not spot on !!!

Finally crack it, the bottom outside was to deep by 2mm.

A quick trim down and that problem fix.

Lots of masking, I think I will have to restock !!!

Made to wheelhouse floor as well as the base panels for the two cabins which will keep to the hull square for the next glue-ing up.

Next is a new keel .

Hi All

A few more days work on the hull with the first layer of outer stringers added.

The original plans did not have middle stringers in the hull bottom.

I added these to stop drumming of the hull because of the thin outer plywood skin.

The keel and the first bulkhead(missing from the kit) had work out well.

Used bulkhead 2 and 5 as template for the boat stand with the same spacing on the base board.

House door stopper under the base board to keep it off the ground.

4mm dense foam with sticky back for the hull to sit on.

My Lord it's starting to look like a boat !!!

Hi All
Major project to make the boat stand !!!

Used bulkhead 2 and 5 templates for my cross sections.

Door stoppers for under the stand and to hide the screws for the cross sections.

4mm sticky back hard foam in the cross sections.
On the boat added the two outer stringers.

Hi All

Started on the little curve bits for the deck.

The bow section of the deck is too high, but the big flat file will fix all that !!!

Made the rear cabin roof as well, clamping the top section to the bottom via the window opening .

This work out very well with only a bit of filler to add later at the corners.

With all the stringers installed the hull is pretty solid.

So next is the forward cabin roof and the curved section under the wheelhouse windscreen.

This generally is my problem area, I have come up with a new plan and hope it works !!!!

Hi All

A lot of test fitting today, making and gluing in the curved bits for the forward cabin roof.

Also made the curved piece for across the front windows.

I am adding a vee into this and the wheelhouse windscreen.

Hi All
Well thank you Will !!!

The forward cabin roof is finished with tags under the cross section ready for the front window panel.

A double 10mm magnet holds down the rear end.

I found the bulkhead 2 which I copied from the original was 4mm out on one side at the deck and side corner.

I added timber and retrimmed to correct it!!

I have replaced the forward deck with a one piece piece of plywood.

Finished all the camber pieces ready for the deck.

The motors for another few projects arrived today, so replacing one in another boat for the one I am installing
in the Wavemaster !!!

A 35mm 1250kv on 3S Lipo for this one.

So it will onto making the motor mount and installing the motor as well as the prop shaft.

Hi All

The last few days have been cold with snow down to 400 meters !!!!

So glue is slow drying, but I have done the motor mount for the 540/35mm brushless motor.

The disc on the mount is my alignment tool which I designed.

Uses the motor mount holes to hold the mount and the drive shaft clamps onto the center hole.

Next job is to shorten the drive tube and glue that into place.

All fun in 10C !!!!

Hi all.

I've just received a Vintage model works Wavemaster 34 from SLEC. First thing I noticed how great the laser cutting is and in comparison to the SLEC police launch it has zero sawdust, I had enough sawdust with police launch to set up a lucky dip!!

My question is in relevance to this post is that the instructions call for the use of building board/jig whereas the 'originals' didn't use a building board and virtually slotted together!

So, is a building board/jig necessary for the modern tooling??

My other concern is that the skins aren't pre-shaped which the police launch and my previous boat build of the Aeronaut Jenny both had pre-shaped skins.

What sort of issues am I likely to encounter with the skinning and is there a way to.make/use a template beforehand??

Kind regards

Hi Dave,
The original H&M Wavemaster 34 kit did use a jig to build it - check the thread on Mayhem to see it and read about it.

Hi All

I check the original skins and they are pre-shaped, but totally wrong at the bow.

Also the side ones are too short and starting to delaminate at the bow.

So new skins for the sides and bottom of the boat.

The bottom ones I am reshaping for templates to get my new ones right.

The sides ones I can use from bulkhead 2 back as templates and new forward of that !!!

Over size-ing for a bit as per the old way skins were cutout.

Hi All

Cutout the new skins today ready for test fitting.
One side of the bottom clapped on for a bit of minor trimming.

Heat gun onto the bow area with some heavy clamps to pre-bend the plywood to shape.

Will do the same to the other side before starting gluing.

I am having a semi-enforced "rest" at the moment - but not for too much longer!

Soon I will be bothering Tony again with some more pictures - but first I need to find out why my ESC is not happy to share too much electricity with any of the three motors I have fitted into my Remora!

Once I have got this problem solved I will get back to cutting some wood again!

Hi All

Well that was a lot easier putting the spray rails on before the sides !!!

Able to clamp each one down and on the mark line for gluing.

I have not added any strakes to my original H&M Wavemaster 34 hull, but I still have the "strake making" jig set-up on my bandsaw, so I think I will make some more and fit some to my hull too.

Strakes would probably not have been used on a craft like this (?) so they may not be very "scale" like - but they do look good!

I will probably run mine full length - but the shortened ones that you have fitted look good.

BTW - what is that black/dark brown glue you have been using on the bulkheads etc?  It looks a bit like hotmelt?
