Bangers and Cash
« on: August 15, 2024, 06:02:49 pm »

I'm just watching some old episodes of bangers and cash, and they've bought an old sea queen. Just wondering if it was anyone on here that is doing the restoration?

I've seen that a couple of times. Just goes to show how much it costs if you get someone else  to do the work and how you rarely get back the cost of your own builds.

absolutely true.....no money to be made in model building for others. you are basically doing it for love and materials, unless of course you have the  name such as Malcolm Darch  has in model ship building.

Yes very much so, I said to my wife when they bought it that there was no way they'd make any money, though it went for several hundred more than I thought it would.

Hi all I was with friends about 30 odd years ago now and we sailed into Salcombe and went to look up Malcolm Darch.  He was very happy to invite us in and we talked about his current millionaires commission for his yacht.  One for display and one radio controlled for playing with!  He made everything to exact scale even copying the shape of the prototype propellors.

We chatted had coffee and then he said to me, "would I like to take on a restoration of a working Bassett-lowke cargo ship"?
One of the big regrets of my life when I declined, as I was thinking where would I put it in our yacht?  So I turned the offer down and we left, thinking back I would like to have him recommend me for restorations he could not make time for.  Later the yacht owner said you could have put it in my cabin, (read stateroom).

Aah! regrets, I have a few.....
