Until my wife got an allotment of the soil variety I always assumed that an allotment was the amount of money sent home every month. Times change.

Could you dig a big hole and fill it with water for testing model boats?

Best spuds I've ever had were from a friend's allotment.   O0

I have heard about these "Friends" before.

Yes, homegrown always taste better, or that's what the slugs seem to think round here  :(

Andy grow your spuds in a plastic dustbin, just drill a hole for drainage. pest free and no digging.

SWMBO and my sister took over an allottment last year after waiting for nearly 3 years for one to become vacant. There are currently 103 people on the waiting list. Don't knock it. If people were not prepared to put in an awful lot of effort (and getting enjoyment) these areas would be taken over by property "developers" and filled with buildings the so-called "developers" would not be seen dead in. I feel really sad for those East Londerners who have been evicted by Commissar Livingstone. Long live the allotment holders. BY.

Many allotments in the Nottm area seem derelict yet there is still awaiting list. Would seem that as the lease holders get older and unable to carryout the hard work necessary they still hang on to the lease and go there just for some peace and quite. Cannot blame really in this day and age.

Being basically idle (I don't dig) but liking the taste of fresh veg etc I grow everything in containers from spuds to runner beans.

I find this the easiest way effort wise and I have more control over watering etc which produces a better crop.

Good idea but I'd need an awful lot of dustbins Colin, around 40 I'd estimate and I'd be forever watering. I do grow carrots in plastic barrels mind you, keeps the carrot fly away  O0.
I've given up part of mine this year & I'm down to 7 rods in an attempt to give me more time for boats & child minding my Grandson  :D. If the rain ever stops I might even get a chance to drag the rotavator out and get some work done

Jeez Andy thats a lot of spuds, I average about 40lb per dustbin and believe the world record to be over 100lbs but don't quote me on that.

Being a mean bu--er I try not to spend on containers so reuse whats available. The black plastic pots that shops receive cut flowers in are great for forcing new spuds in the green house, round here they sell them for £1-10p for ten. Second Early's go into plastic water tanks (I am a plumber).

I use them for all sorts of things just drill a couple of holes for drainage and they must be the cheapest plant pot going. Every year I put in 16 runner bean plants 1 to a pot this with freezing will give me beans for Sunday dinner all year.

When the rims crack after a couple of years I cut them down and use them for radish.

I believe 4 or 5 per bin is recommended but you'll have to be quick if you want new spuds this year

Martin, lay off the spuds, they'll just make matters worse. What you need is boiled rice - you just need to get into a paddy.... ;)

Martin,

Try and get hold of a potato called Swift, this is very fast growing about 10 weeks.

If you have a green house get some pots about the size of the black flower buckets already mentioned. Put two seed potato's in each bucket which should be about 1/3 full of compost making sure the seeds are covered.

When the greenery starts to show gradually fill the bucket with compost, making sure you always leave the greenery above ground so to speak. Keep well watered and fed I use Miracle grow.

At ten weeks carefully pull the plant out of the pot and have a look at what you have got. If not quite ready slide plant back into pot and leave a futher 2 weeks.

Each pot should keep you in new potato's for about a week.

I would normally start this about mid Feb so my extra earlies are ready at the same time as the Jersey Royals are at their most expensive.

Bryan Young is probably right about the potential for these areas being taken up for development.
I'm lucky at the request of SWMBO we put our names down last year and we just completed our first days graft restoring our patch ready for some planting. Luckily we know a like minded young family to spread the workload with (I'm not totally mad).
Our association here in Caerleon, S.Wales is really vibrant apparently with a cross section of people from families with youngsters through to professional people and the retired. I'm told the social barbecue events are legendary.
Big up the allotment massive I say!! (they are all having a pop at me in office and threatening slippers and a cardi).

At least I can try and be a little less dependent on those monstrous supermarkets and you cant beat a bit o' fresh local veg.

Oh and before any one tries: don't tell Tony Robinsons lot about my dig - its bloomin agriculture not blinkin archaeological !!

Well thanks to `global cooling` we are a little late this year but the weather has now changed round these parts and things are beginning to kick of.

I thought I might post a few pics of my `pot ` garden and guys thats plant pots not funny weed.

1st apple tree in blossom and in a pot.

2nd new potatoes in their little black buckets.

3rd main onions also in pots.

4th when the little black pots crack cut them down and use for raddish. I am to tight to throw anything away.
