« on: February 24, 2008, 09:10:13 pm »

Hi everyone im just tryin to find out some stuff about bigger tugs/models

My dad seems intrested after seein the me tito run but hes after something rtr or artr im guessin you cant get a foot 7 rtr tug lol

Iv been seein the happy hunter and smit 7ish foot tugs, whats the deal with these can you buy the hulls? or kits? or do you have to scratch build them?

I know he wont scratch build a hull, but maybe if you can buy the hull or something it might help

Any info on larger models would be cool  even big oil tankers anything cool n big lol

The only thing i can find is the graupner thing but its not very big at 1m long

any help will be good help

all the best

There is a comprehensive four page article on Cao San Diego in the latest issue of Model Boats. A Model World is selling it for £659. Not a bad price for what you get. The motor and running gear is included but you have to add the R/C and batteries yourself.

Sorry but to build something that big one would have to scratch build. The Robbie Happy Hunter is 1m but as i allready have one I am now embarking on my BIGGETS project to date a 2m long HH It's comparatively easy fro me as I can measure the original and double the size. This I hope will keep me happy!!!!!! for the next 2yrs or so.And before anyone asks yes it will have to have a trailer to carry it.Should be fun

Ta guys iv shown him that one already but the beam is to small, iv tryed tellin him that their aint really anything out there, but i just wanted to make sure, i wasnt missin anything

deans marine seem to sell a 1.6m >> http://deansmarine.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/10_20/products_id/379   but not to sure about it

is someone built something over 1.6 thats rtr im sure they would sell ( thats big ) and not not skinny

i guess we could knock up a oil tanker hull at 10 feet but it would cost so much to just do one, and i duno if anyone would want something that big as it would be proper big lol and it would be a hull only, so im not sure its something we could sell  :D

easyer to just build real ones lol

Thanks for the idears though :)

Edit: Stavros, whats the costs in making something like that at 2m?

Why do you want something that large? It will weigh a huge amount and be really difficult to transport, launch and recover. You may also encounter difficulties with limitations on which ponds it can be floated in as the margins can often be quite shallow.

I don't look at prices it might frighten me off,but being realistic probably with all the electric gubbins around the grand mark!!!
As why a big model fair comment Colin about limitation of where to sail etc, personally I don't have a problem with launching etc and as fro the size of lake.Well I think 3miles long 3/4 wide I think thats enough water for me O0 O0

Unfortunately we aren't all blessed with inland seas Stavros! I'd really like to try Llanberis though.

Um kinda the same a Stavros though the lake i go to isnt that big lol, its deep and rather large, puttin big models in isnt a problem and takin them out is fine  :) also gettin it there aint a problem we have a massive van

weve just spent hours chatin about stuff, the main thing is he dosnt like is little small models and the small details so something bigger is what hes wants, after talkin hes now on about fishing boats  >:(  its like im takin to a brick wall with him lol

If i can find a hull or something of a larger fishin boat il get it to shh him up  ::) at the small'st it needs to be 1.3m to be able to weight it right so it dosnt "bob up and down to much" < his own words lol and tbf i wouldnt mind tryin to do a fishing boat that big, as it would be bliss full to work on  O0

( looks for fishin boats hull )

Bigford how are you going to make it, with foam then F/G or wood planks?

This is where we get stuck with buildin hulls to do it with foam would take forever makin a plug then a mold and finally the hull

We do know a place that can make and cut to the right size a foam plug and they also spray it with a hardner but it is very costly i.e £500+ to make the fishing boat plug, then we can take a mold off of it and the make the hull, but doto all this for one hull is abit pricey, and we really duno if anyone would want a hull and nothing else?

I would say a tito neri at 2m long and 600mm wide would be perfect but from are point of view it will probs cost £800+ for the plug done and ready then £150 to the make mold and another £100 to make a hull, wight id guess would be added with built in tanks that can be filled

it would be cheaper to buy in a hull but its like no where sells something this big,, and i guess like colin said not alot of people can sail something of this size

Sure would be something cool to see though a 2m tito  :D

Il keep my search going for something of the right size and il look into what the cost will add upto for a fishing boat and big tug

Would anyone even consider buyin a 1.3m fishing boat hull or a 2m tug hull, just wonderin who would be crazzy anoth to even atemped it

i'm going to do plank on frame then glass, but blue foam would be cool for not
having the frames taling up hull space

Hi Bigford

I am sure there are lots of folks on here who would love to see a build thread, if you haven't already started one. O0

Tynemouth Model Boat Club has a "tanker" of about 12' long which can be used for towing practice, but is also self powered. Ballasted down she weighs in excess of 600lb. (Possibly up to 800lb).

One of our gang has a 6 foot long Tid Tug...It is stored on & moved around on an old ambulance trolley...HMS HERNIA is its nickname...One wrong move in launching & you end up on the trolley...
He uses it to tow a boat load of kids round our pond...
I will see if i can find some pictures...

Why dont you put out a request for a large scale boat in the Wants column...As my Late Mother used to say..." You dont get if you Dont Ask"...

You are not far away from manned models at these sizes. The Portsmouth  guys are exponents of cheap-to-build lightweight ships. www.pmbdt.co.uk  You dont have to sit in them of course, I`m sure suitable R/C gear could be found.
