High John, What an excellent article and a great help to any beginner. It reminded me of my Waverider build many years ago when I had neither a photocopier, tracing paper or carbon paper so the plans were transferred to the wood by pricking through with a sharp point and joining up the dots. I must have been a very patient young man in those days. Cheers Graham.  O0

Great stuff, thanks Bluebird. O0

Often it is the little bits of detail on the 'how to' that could save me me so many problems. ::)

What a lovely article John.   I read it all with interest. Well done.

Just the thing for Newbies, and Christmas coming as well. This should encourage a new generation of Boat Builders.

Cheers... Ken

The original plans came from Model Boats Magazine - I believe in about the year 1852  :P  The plans and article in the Magazine were written by our very own FLJ.    I have just had a quick check on the Model Boats website and am unable to locate the plans, so, I dare say, if you ask in a nice manner - our very own FLJ will possibly be able to supply the plans.   I only have the article also written by FLJ for finishing the hull.

I've had the OK from Paul Freshney to provide copies of the original plans. Anyone interested should send me a PM and I'll see what I can do. Price will be @ cost to me + P&P. I reckon about £3.50 to UK. Sorry but these were done with a pen, so no CAD files available!

Thank you for the kind comments lads; Ive just received communication that the plan is available (for anyone who is interested in the above build) for approx £3.80 plus P&P from F.L.J. (Dave M.)  make that £3.50 (modified after reading Dave's posting)  ;) ;)

On the subject of cost to build, just on materials alone Liteply, prop shaft, rudder, coupling, servo for rudder - comes to round about £35 about, that is excluding speed controller or motor.

Absolutely Brilliant and well put together. I totally agree with Bob.....been making planes since the seventies.....and have never seen detailed explanation as yours. O0
My favourite - your special little tips....helps to avoid a big stuff up.

In have to say Bluebird this is a superb build thread and absolutely perfect to help a beginner to try his had at modelling from a plan.

You may well be responsible for starting someone off down the road to model boats with this.  The pictures and text clearly show what is required to get the results and is actually a lot better than some manufacturers instructions.  This is just the sort of thing that makes Mayhem what it is and attracts new members to us.

Hi John,

Great thread only wish it was done this time last year before my attempt at that very boat. I am sure my effort would have turned out so much better.

Yours Colin H.

Here's one I made earlier.........a LOT earlier!

Bl00dy g00d show, John! Much better than the original article.  O0

I think SLEC list the Liteply in these sizes, but I guess carriage to Oz would be a bit of a problem. I also seem to think that your Customs won't let anything wooden into the country (which rather scuppers any holiday plans I might have had!).

FLJ

FLJ
Who is SLEC, I'm having problems sourcing ply in 0.4mm and 0.6mm. The customs bit is a strange one. They kick up a stink when you fly in and have something made out of wood yet we import Balsa from god knows where, Merbau from Malaysia and many other timbers all imported.

I see this is an area I will have to investigate as for carriage to Oz, well I suppose if you can keep the overall dimensions down to say 1.0 metre, the weight doesn't matter because the air freighters go by volumetric weight instead............Hmmm ....food for thought ;) ;)

Holiday Plans - why, have you got a wooden leg {-) {-) {-)

www.slecuk.com will reach them, but they are currently re-doing their website. They used to make the Precedent range of model aircraft kits - and still do make a few of them - as well as the Perkasa and Huntsman kits. I spoke to Ian Hull, the Boss, a couple of weeks ago and he reckons that giving up those two kits was the daftest decision he ever made. The Liteply is the main ingredient of their aircraft kits, and it's from SLEC (or Balsacraft, as they used to be) that I obtained my supply, albeit a long time ago now. I suggest you send them an E-Mail and see what's what; they specialise in mail order and have customers world-wide so I reckon they will be able to help out.
As regards the wood, it's the bit between the ears which would cause problems..........  8)

Nice, very nice.  I understood everything about the write up....no problems  O0

I would like to see a poll put up on these articles our members submite. It certainly would makes a difference if the author knows their writings were (are)  appreciated.

Still mystifies me how you get a super smooth finish with the tissue.  :-\

Anyway, thank you all once again for the kind comments etc., but, what really will make us all happy on this Forum if a newbie comes on here and says 'Look what I have made - through the help of all the members on the Forum'.   That will be the day, we can all give ourselves a pat on the back.

John,
It's not just the newbies but recycled modellers like myself.
During this post, I have picked up new techniques in approaching a problem or a better method of construction. As I stated earlier, its those little tips and hints that you gave will help me build a better model........and I still have more questions :embarrassed:

SO, GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK O0 O0 O0
