Dave

Got my ammonia in Boots. Small white bottles with child proof tops. Asked at the pharmacy but it was out on the shelves.

Why is ammonia needed for making balsa word bend? Wouldn't water do the trick?

I have not tried Ammonia but it is said to be better than water so I want to try an experiment.

Biggest snag would be the smell but have been told to wash it off with water before use.
Thanks

Isn't Windex an Oz or USA product? I think that you can get a UK window cleaning product (windowlene?) with Ammonia which may be the answer.

Guess who gets to clean the windows in this house {-)

Hi Doug
Tried Boots some very funny looks they said they did not have a licence to sell it.

I think I am now on the terrorist list trying to buy bomb make equipment.

Ammonia like ammonium nitrate is very strange into days world. If you want a ton then thats OK if you want smaller quantities you are treated with suspicion.

Guess its alright to make large bombs but not small :-\ :-\ :-\

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that Mr Muscle glass cleaner is the same as Windex. At least the ingredient list sure looks similar.

SC Johnson sells Windex over here in NA at almost all grocery, hardware, auto and practically any other kind of general merchandise stores. I have about 3 bottles here at home. At work we go through cases of it. It's a great general purpose cleaner. I often see people wiping phones and computer keyboards with it that they share with others. Some bottles say they come with Ammonia D and others don't, there's about 10 different varieties. It's mostly water and Isopropyl Alcohol with a few other minor things to fancy it up some.

SC Johnson sell Mr Muscle in the UK and since I've never seen Mr Muscle glass cleaner here, I would assume it's your equivalent.

Ammonia, on the other hand, can be purchased anywhere we buy laundry detergent, in liter or gallon jugs. I'm surprised it's hard to get over there.

Dave

I'm sitting here with the bottle in front of me. It's 500 mls. The label says 'Boots Household Ammonia'   'Household Cleaner and Laundry Aid'. However, I did buy mine a few years ago, possibly six or seven.  :-\

All the usual warnings but no product number  :(

It's a 9.5% solution. Very smelly but enabled me to bend 1/2" by 1/8" wood across the 1/2". The secret is not to soak your wood for too long, a few minutes no more, or it turns to mush. I believe the ammonia reacts with the cellulose in the wood making it extremely pliable.

Best of luck with your hunt
