Check the alignment of the motor and shaft, if it is slightly out it might put a side load on the shaft and increase friction causing it to heat up. When fitting the motor to the tug I am building I used a 3D printed tube to replace the coupling and it seemed to be well lined up. On testing the motor it was running warm off load and the shaft bearing was also heating up. After moving the motor forward and fitting a double coupling everything now runs cool. Everything felt free running with the original setup and single coupling.

Hi Chris,

Just don’t under stand it. Some questions

So is it just one of the shafts that is getting hot ?

If so is it the one that broke the UJ ?

I assume it’s just the steady bearing that’s getting hot ?

Am I correct in assume that all shaft spin freely?
[/quote

HI DAVE YES on all 4 qeustions

AN yes you are right bob
but to hell with it im just  gonna sail her at half throttle an see if it happen again as i have a spare s/s prop shaft so if there is somthing up with that prop sharft then i'll knock it out an fit n the new shaft
but this will be the last resort

            Hi Chris,
In one of the photo`s the thread looks slightly to long, the thread needs to be no longer
than the brass UJ insert, if its to long it may rub on the centre brass UJ joint part.
Taking washers off would make it screw in further. Just a thought.

HI Bryan
thanks for your reply but lookin at it close up the prop shaft is not touchin the center brass in the U/J where the heat is is in the brass couplin  that connects to the prop shaft as ive just been able to hold it when stopped an takin that washer off would only make it 1mm longer so i should not think this is the problem

i think the prob may be the prop shaft perhaps the bearin have broken or it grease inside as dreid up so im takin the prop shaft right out an rescirtin new grease into the tube  then refittin the shaft an try that
cheers guys

Morning Chris,

Can the steady bearing be removed, so you can check it for wear, any damage and alignment check.

ATB to you and Jen  :-))

i dont know yet Dave as im goin to have a look at it today  as the bad shaft is on the far side on the hull an due to the size of the hull i cant see it but when running the motors yesterday i found that shaft was vibratein so today im goin to have to angle the hull on the table so i can see that prop shaft better an withdraw that shaft an have a gander an if it looks ok then i'll refill it with new grease an if that dont cure the prob then i'll have to try an take out the shaft an fit a new one

HI GUYSwell yesterday took Tiger up for her forth sail an it was a beautifull day nice an warm but not as hot as last time an the modifications i have made to Tiger seemed to have worked very well as she was sailin just great an did not blow them 40 amp fuses so great i thought she's a success but then something strange happend i noticed that when sailing ahead the outer props went into full astern while the rear props kept goin ahead an i was practically pullin my hair out now whats wrong i thought an all i can think of is one of them ESC is playin up as i first thought it might be the R/X given the ESC false signals so i fitted a new spare R/XAN then treid her again an yes she's goin great really good propwash very powerfull an she surgerd ahead an was sailing great an i gave her some full head flank speed an she sailed again   i was very pleased but then to my amazement it did the props ahead an outer props in astern AGAIN SO right today im goin to remove that ESC that works the outer motors an have all 4 motors goin through just ONE ESC an it should be able to take the power current load as its rated at 320 AMPS an also i think i need to fit in a bigger one qauter scale heavy duty big servo to work the rudder an stablilizers as she dint answer the helm properly when under ahead forword so more cost buyin one of them but i think im gettin her right its just the gremlins to get rid of as i was very pleased at how she sailed when sailin ahead so im gettin there slowy an not givin up its just a matter of getting it all right OH DEAR an i'll fit some pics of the day tomorrow as gettin late now  :-) :-)) so i think i will need a bigger qauter size servo on the rudder anyone know what the number is for one ?chrisb

That is progress Chris! No more searching for issues and having to rebuild gubbins, just (all being well) a modification to control, and she's off to the races!

Well Chris, I'm glad you were able to give her another set of trials, but oh, I wish I had remembered you were sailing on the 8th - I've just been in East Dereham since Thursday night and just got back home at 1600 today!... and home is all the way up in Northumberland!
What a crazy journey that was... Anyway, I just hope you get them electrical problems sorted and maybe I can get back down that way sometime so I can see Tiger up close.

Cheers,
Ray.

Hi Chris

Both pleased and sorry for you that Tiger sailed well, but with ESC issues, so  >>:-( >>:-(
Howels Models do this servo, bit pricey at £38.99

The HS-805 uses a heavy duty nylon gear train and a heavy duty 10mm 15 tooth output shaft. The HS-805BB develops enough torque to move just about anything, be it a big plane, boat, or Car.

I found this on eBay.
