Who's building what at the moment?
« on: March 30, 2020, 09:51:12 am »

The media is full of a certain virus at the moment something we are all taking seriously. Yes our model shows and and normal sailing sessions throughout the land have been cancelled. With this in mind it would be nice to see how your confinement projects are taking shape in any form.

Stan.  At the moment. :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( But things will improve then. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Good idea Stan but I think the topic would be better renamed - 'News from the Workshop' or something like that.

The lobster boat needs the battery changing and Gambier Bay needs some paintwork.

HI That's a big one. What is the scale of the model?  Are you going to apply a disruptive pattern to the hull?

LCT2627 was one of only two LCT6 landing craft to operate in RN service, so I will be going with the white and light blue/grey camo familiar to RN landing craft. The model is strictly semi-scale, being closer to 1/24 than 1/16, but is designed for four 1/16 Shermans or similar load. Length is about 72 inches with the door up.

Im still working, but last friday, I decided to sort the loft out and square away a load of stuff stored over winter. I had, the previous week, tidied the 2 outdoor sheds to accept more stuff, so I started at 10am, by 3pm, I had put another 7 boats outside, numerous boxes of tools that had crept in doing work in the winter, sheets of plastic etc.
Now with all this done, i thought I WOULD HAVE A TIDY UP OF THE VARIOUS shelves of doom, drawers of odds and sods and sort out my motors shelves. So i put my little heater on in the loft, as there are a few drafty spots. After sorting out the battery and charging area i noticed a burning smell. Fans still going so thought it was just the usual dust on the element. Then the fan stopped working. Upon further investigation, it seemed to be the fuse in the extension lead had blown. Changed and still not working. Checked extension, and there's a melted hole in the back!!!! so the rest of the day was spent clearing the desk down and running a new 10 gang extension round to the other side of the room! other than that, Im hoping to start one of th Amera kits I got for Christmas....more on that soon!

Mornin' Klunk!,
Had you wound the cable out fully? If not, and no thermal cutout, quite possible to melt it on the normal 2000 watt fan. No doubt you knew this anyway and you were just seeing if anyone was awake! :}

If a reel type extension cable is used at anything like its rated capacity it must be fully extended.  What is left on the reel is effectively an induction coil, and does a grand job of dissipating energy as heat, quite possibly generating enough temperature to melt the insulation on the wires.  A 2KW fan on a nominal 240 volts pulls about 8 and a bit amps.  If the heater is designed for 220 volts, it will pull over 9 amps, both too close to the limt on a reel designed for 10 amps for comfort.

Managed to almost finish this one during lock-down... just waiting for some brass rod to arrive ......

The second picture is of a newly started Milford Star.... Taking a bit of thought as the instructions and drawing etc are a bit iffy.... the two large wooden blocks are supposedly for the water tanks... I  would say they're a bit large so finished a more "to scale one which is temporarily located on the rear of the superstructure!

Why are they protesting - not being furloughed I supposed, RCD - really corny dialogue ?

I have turned the end of my worksop into a bar, the trouble is the only customer I get is Mrs Steambopat Apprentice, and now I have to explain
why there are several half built boats, one 6ft long steam boat and a few sets of castings, all of which at the time I had successfully snuck into the workshop.........might have to close the bar........ :embarrassed: ...just in case she looks under the bench...... <*<

I don't get to spend much time at home these days as I'm always traveling for work!  I work in Paris suburbs but stuck home back in UK at moment while I can't client rep in Glasgow either, I set-up office back home in Culloden.  At least I'm still working as I'm a contractor.

Plenty of distractions when working from home but honestly limiting myself to evenings and weekends....

Picked up 2 Keter toolboxes from Aldi about 2 weeks ago when I was hunting for supplies.  My Pro. toolboxes are Keter, nothing better in plastic for the price my opinion so I've been sorting and transfering tools over.

I picked up 2 plastic storage boxes from BnQ about 3 weeks ago -MAC tools.  Not the cheapest but good enough for the money so been busy sorting and filing fittings and RC bits, I need a 3rd box now really but it will wait.

I took my pilot boat back from the apartment in Paris in February packed inside a suitcase.  Lucky co-incidence considering whats happened since.  I'm now 95% finished it but I don't have any revel orange enamel for some bits so will have to mail-order a tin!

I've concentrated on my mini Loyal Fleet tender from Mountfleet.  It's about 70% done now.  Mostly just painting left to do.  It's not meant to be anything more than stand-off scale, and it's all a bit squint and winky wonky close-up!  It's a nice little model though.
