Masking adhesive removal
« on: September 25, 2006, 03:35:12 pm »

Hi all,

Can anyone advise me on the best way to remove a thin film of adhesive left on the hull of my RTTL from masking.

The hull is plastic and the paint used was Tamiya acrylic. The masking was also Tamiya. I thought that by using this make of tape with their paints, ??? they would be compatible, evidently not.

So far I have tried light rubbing withthe fine wet and dry. Rubbing wit Tamiya thinners. I know that WD40 will remove the adhesive but am concerned that future paint coats will be effected by it.

If anyone has had the same problem and can help I would appreciate it.

Pete.     ???

Hair dryer to soften the adhesive (don't tell the missus)  and a wipe with white spirit should sort it.

Perkasa,

I use Tamiya tape and have never had a problem. How long did you leave it on?

Doug has got to the crucial point of this problem - you can't leave any masking tape on (regardless of whose tape it is) longer than it takes for the paint to dry.

Best to just get it off as soon as you can, otherwise you'll risk causing more problems than you started with!  ;)

Doug,

Try these.....

WD40

ZOFF ( this is from pharmacies, it removes sticking plaster glue form around wounds) or

BBQ lighter fluid.

If using WD and you need to spray over the area again make sure you use Meths or the BBQ lighter fluid so as to wash away any contamination.

Thanks lads.

I can see where I went wrong. I left the tape on to long. This shows my inexperience.

This to me proves what a brilliant site Mayhem Forum is. Knowing that there are people out there that do not know each other, and yet are willing to help is wonderful.

Pete.

Be careful with acetone! I was using it to clean up difficult spots on my 1:1 scale GRP boat and found it was dissolving the gel coat!

Hi Pete,

I find that if you dab the masking tape on your cloths before sticking it on the model it reduces the stick and leaves less resedue.

Just make sure you havnt got to much hair or fluff!

I have a bottle of kicker called Flashtac, it accelerates glue dying, a light spray and it will remove any sticky residue with no damage to paint or plastics....

All those where you take the labels off and it leaves the sticky behind.

Maybe could have phrased that better. Will now get all those threads about sticky behinds.

I've always found meths to be a useful solvent for removing masking tape and sticker traces, as well as many other things, very useful stuff to have around in fact. Quite safe to use on recently applied paint as well, and it doesn't leave any residue.

Go along to your friendly motor paint factor and buy yourself a Gallon, yes a Gallon of PANEL WIPE not only will it remove masking tape residue but degrease a model prior to painting blooming marvellous stuff,no modeler should be without it.A word of warning lads spraying WD40 on a model will have disastrous results if further painting is too be done due to the silicone content!!!

Also be careful spraying bug spray, if it lands on the surface you are going to paint, it will do some very strange things to the paint, as a mate found out the hard way......
