1ndex.html - what is it????
« on: March 23, 2013, 09:59:45 am »

When I go to pages on the site, I get asked to run an indexing app - and it can take ages to press all the cancel buttons to get rid, despite saying 'don't show again'

Can somebody tell me how to get rid, or stop them - it's only just started happening, and it's a pain - can an admin please switch this OFF

Thanks

Chris

index.html (or index.htm) is the root page for any web address. It's the default page that loads if you don't specify a particular page.

I've no idea what an indexing app is - the only thing Google returns is some stuff from ancestry websites.

What equipment, operating system and browser are you using to view this site?

Sounds like you may have something on your machine doing this  rather than the site, also read that W8 seems to have some sort of app thing associated , However I am on W8 but not had a message like yours, Strange but that's computers for you.

Thanks for the replies.

I get it when I go to the Galleries page, then select (say) Felixstowe. Loads of message boxes which I have to click cancel. Happens on other pages too, but always happens on that one.

Using Windows 7, with FireFox version 19 if that helps anybody.

This page? -

Just checked that out on the galleries, was asked about Java which is a standard pop up re Active X  but nothing about the index.html

W7 is pretty stable so wonder if its anything to do with firefox..?

Windows 7 and Firefox 19.0.2 here.

And I see the pop-ups referred to! Aha!

Well, let's don the deerstalker, light the pipe, take a look through the magnifying glass and peek under the bonnet...

(Some time later, back in Baker Street)

  • Frames, Doctor Watson. Invented in 1996 and now deprecated for years!  <:(
  • Applets too. The pop-ups ... ummm, "pop up" when the page loads. It's because our Firefoxes (but not RMH's) are asking us whether we want to let the applets run or not. It's a safety issue: these are ok (the applets provide a link to the gallery images) but there are newer technologies around today which'd do the job better: and without popping a thing.  O0
  • Biggest horror: the website is nowhere near HTML5/CSS3 standards. Indeed, there's no Cascading Stylesheet at all. It's rather as if the main site was brewed up ten years ago, and almost smells of something churned out by an old Microsoft program.  <*<
Martin - I'm always on the forum, hardly ever look at the main site: but it needs a make-over.
I'd suggest something in WordPress: port all the content to a WordPress platform. It would make your/administrator's jobs of updating and uploading new articles super-easy (being a CMS), and you could tweak design and layout to your heart's content once done.
