Easy build boat plans
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:52:43 am »

I am  looking for easy to build r/c boat plans to  promote r/c boat building in an elementary school setting.  The students range in age from 9 to 11 years old. I hope to establish a model boat club at my school for the new school year. Does anyone have suggestions for possible builds ?

Have a look at the springer tugs on the home page, there is a download of hull plans there.

Lots here built them, so plenty of help/advice available.

They are an easy build and can be customised to individual choice/colour - perfect for school projects.

Hi Jolly Roger

I have built a springer tug and have some drawings of the running gear, if you want copies of them PM me. Also this forum has a mass of information on these tugs http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=522762&page=20. They are really easy to build the hull being six pieces of wood and the superstructure is up tp you.

I also think the Springer could be a good project, as all the kids can personalize thier own superstructure.
My other concern would be cost for txRx, motor etc.
Or are the parents wealthy?

Define elementary. How old?

Or
If you looking for something that is really cheap and easy.
Some workable models have been made of blue foam.

The kids could also design thier own, hydrodynamics will not be a factor, as the boats will sit on the water.
Because they are foam they are unsinkable and with a flat bottom they cannot roll over.

You could even do a mast and sails (decorative), but still have a motor. So they can do Pirates of the Carribean.

The Springer looks great. I will have some time off soon , and I will try my hand at building a couple . I have two Graupner hydro drive units to use, although they are quite noisy .
Thanks !  Jolly Roger

Hi all,

As posted previously, I have just got my springer on the water.
I used a cheap motor and gear box because I had it going spare. Normally if I want a reduction in revs, I use a belt system as I hate the noisy gear box sound. But on the springer, the noise of the gear box makes it sound better, (in my opinion)
They remind me of a Jack Russell terrier manic and noisy.
