The little grey cells are on overtime today...I'm thinking of building it as it was going to be, but adding a yacht type keel to it. A friend of mine built a small paddler and had awful stability problems, he added a small bulb keel and cured it completely.

A torpedo fishing lead on a small removable keel, held on with neowotsit magnets should cure the problems.

I hope...

What about a flat bottomed dory style hull?  I would suspect these are built more from available material then any sort of plan.  Suitably painted and weathered, it might look right, and the flatter bottom should give you more static stability.  Picture this, only weathered, with the OB replaced by a longtail:

As for the motor, what about a geared unit?  Output shaft on the top as opposed to the bottom, as this would allow the mass of the motor to sit lower.  With a model this small, lowering weight even a small amount will have a huge impact.

Hmm...interesting ideas CB. I did contemplate adding a flat bottom to mine, but the geared motor idea..well, I'd have never have thought of that. That must deserve a  :-)) !!

You could try the motor in the bottom of the hull and have it connected by a belt drive to a hollow imitation motor above.  All on a solid rotating assembly which would mean a motor length shorter than the hull width to allow it to pivot.

Well ... you did ask for ideas.    :}

Motor sitting in the bottom, only vertical, output shaft sticking up.  Bevel gears on the motor shaft and propshaft.  Engine mount rotates around the same point as the motor shaft.

Before resorting to anything drastic, I thought I'd have one last try with the set up as it is. The results surprised me, I do believe I'm getting somewhere now.

A long strip of lead taped under the hull has changed things dramatically, the boat now sits level in the water, albeit a bit low as yet, but the lead hasn't been trimmed, it's just as I found it. (sorry vicar...but my needs were greater than yours)  ;D
It's also very stable, a good poke or two with a finger couldn't get it to fall over, so I think it's worth cracking on again. I'll continue building it as per Plan A, and see what happens.

This is all very interesting and so unusual. I'm enjoying your thought processes  (and the members).   :}

Whilst studying your picture again today I wondered if torque comes into play when the motor is turning at speed and the boat might start turning over in the opposite direction.

Cheers

One step ahead, Ken...(unusually for me)...the motor is only a 12v 385, and the prop is only 20mm diameter, so it's a long slow process to build up the revs. Whilst it was in the bath earlier, I did try connecting a 9v Duracell direct to the motor...torque roll was negligible, nothing a slow hand on the throttle stick won't handle. I'll only be using a small 7.2v lipo cell for motive power, so no huge amounts of power to be dealing with. There is plenty of go in the motor, though...but I don't think I'll be leaving huge rooster tails behind me with it.

Working on the assumption that our Asian cousins would be using whatever materials they have to hand(or can lay their hands on) I've been playing about with duckboards, floorboards, etc, using what materials I could find in my cupboard. A few coffee stirrers and a couple of pieces of odd scrap ply seem to be enough, I don't suppose these guys would have a lot of time for sitting down when there's fish to be caught for dinner. I've also found a piece of some sort of wood which will be the door at the bows...it'll be rough cut and it won't fit properly, as per a photo I found on the 'net.

I'm pleased you're enjoying me making a fool of myself...I'm an expert at that.  %)

Bow storage compartment door made up...told you it would be rough and it wouldn't fit properly, but that's how the full size one in that photo looked like.

I think that's the best part of the woodwork done and dusted...duckboard is glued up, seats will be covered with a piece of cloth of some sort, and the bow storage compartment door is secured by rope to the wooden cleat you can see. That allows me to remove the door to get at the rx/esc/LiPo pack.

Next up...the fishing gear. I've seen a photo of one of these boats with a long pole across the hull, with two trawl type nets attached to each pole, so I think that's what I'm going to try and replicate.

Little bit more done...I've trimmed down the trawl net pole(for want of a more technical term)and attached it to a crossbeam with a 2mm bolt, so it folds in for stowage and folds out for fishing. A certain amount of good old modeller's licence has had to be applied, but so far I'm pleased with it.

In between having breathing troubles these last couple of days, and getting my Akula ready for Norwich next weekend, I managed to do a bit more on the Long Tail.

Made up another duckboard, I think it looks better than a bare floorboard. I've also had another thought on the lead ballast, hope to try it out later.

would a yacht style centre keel and bulb weight make your model more stable , especially while fishing ?

Getting carried away with this wood stuff now...I decided to plank the motor mount base(someone suggested I should be doing it)and I think it looks quite good, better than bare black styrene. By the time  I've given it some heavy weathering treatment, it'll look ok.

Purists, please note...I can hear you all screaming at your computers ''that looks as rough as a badger's as rear end''...it's supposed to look rough. I did a fair bit of research into these boats before I started on this one, and at least 90% of them are built by poor people with the most basic of tools, from whatever they find laying around, or whatever they can lay their hands on. There were one or two that looked professionally built, but the majority are scruffy, hard worked and under maintained...mine falls into the latter class.
