I am not too familiar with this type of craft.  Do they usually have the transmission left on them for reverse?  or removed for forward only.  On one hand it seems overkill to have a big auto transmission with three forward gears just to have reverse, but on the other hand they seem to be a thrifty way of building a boat out of available parts.

No, not normally...and they don't use socking great V8 motors either. In my defence, it was the only engine I had that I could fit a motor inside, and I left the transmission on to hide the coupling and also to give me somewhere to attach the long prop shaft.

Most of them use four cylinder motors with a direct drive straight from the motor, as in the pic below.

The story so far...

I now have the engine block drilled/filed/hacked/chewed out enough to get the motor inside (I had to use a different motor, the first one I tried didn't have grunt to turn a prop) so I now have a 160 size motor installed. Hopefully it will produce enough power to turn the prop...20mm three blade plastic.

I've managed to open up the hole in the end of the transmission box to get the prop shaft in...again, lots of filing/chewing/hacking/etc needed. Now I'm worrying about the whole lot whipping and flexing and tearing itself to pieces...fingers crossed on that one.

Now, my hands and fingers are telling me enough is enough for a while, so a cup of Yorkshire's finest is called for.

Bit of a failure, I'm afeared...what I dreaded happening has happened. I tested the motor with the shaft and prop attached in the bath, and within seconds the whole lot just disintegrated due to the long prop shaft whipping about, it was like a demented shoelace!

So, back to the drawing board I go...I've found a photo of a Long Tail fitted with a Rotax twin cylinder engine, and it's given me ideas. Plan B is use a slightly larger, but slower revving motor, screwed to the movable mounting plate, and hooked up to the shaft via a rigid coupling. Once done, I'll make up a cover over the motor to resemble the one in the picture. Photos to follow later...

When pictures of these things are shown, its always from the motor side, never the tiller arm side.  I wonder if it would work better if the tiller arm was fitted to the shaft outer and the motor strapped to the tiller arm.  Obviously with a bend in the tiller arm to accommodate the width of the motor, and fixing points as spread out as possible to eliminate unwanted flexing.

I didn't realise I knew so many swear words...I've just had a coupling disintegrate and most of it shot out of the window. Good thing the windows are all wide open...

I'm rapidly approaching Plan C...which is to fit a conventional inboard motor/shaft/rudder and just use the dummy motor and shaft for show. Or Plan C(a) which is to abandon the long shaft and motor and just use the inboard motor assembly, hidden under a box cover.

Hi Rich,
Not sure how your going about making your long tail motor, but ive just come back from Viet Nam, a couple of days ago, and photographed a couple of VN versions.
They are essentually, a frame which supports the motor and swivel, and extends out as a tube to support the shaft and prop.
As said, the motor is supported one end, the short one obviously, and the prop shaft, runs inside a tube which has a bearing inserted at each end, with the prop at the bottom end.
Size of motor is irrelevant, as they are mostly similar, with obvious refinements.
Will try resizing and posting photos if your interested.
cheers

Excellent, that's given me some ideas...many thanks for those. Here's some pics of the first proper dry test fit of the motor, I've given up with the V8(or what was left of it)and I'll camouflage the electric motor to look like the Rotax engined one.

Tea break over...back to it!

Rich,
coming on nicely, however, your motor mount also has to ridgedly support the prop tube, or it simply wont work.
But, i persceive you already found that out.
If you want high res photos, and some more, then pm me your email address and will send them

Oh yes, I'm on that...the rubber tube was just part of the test fit, I'm using a solid brass tube connector in the final version. I think I've worked out how to make the whole lot swivel as well, that way I'll not be needing a rudder or a rudder servo...very useful saving in space and weight.
