Masthead Oil Lamps
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:33:34 pm »

Hi all

I have noticed there has been some interest about manufacturing masthead oil lamps.    For one of the models I made, a good while ago, I had to make two or three of these and the way I overcame the problem of not having wires running up the side of the mast/through the centre of the mast - I used the cable that hoists the lamp up and down on the mast to power the light.

First of all I turned the casing of the lamp out of brass milling out the area for the lamp lens then drilling the 4mm hole in the centre to take the grain of wheat bulb (which was of 6 volt).  Then I went on to modify the grain of wheat bulb by stripping off the existing wires to the bulb leads and soldering on 1mm copper wire, which is represented at B in the drawing.   You will notice I left one of the copper wires longer than the other and after I had done this I placed a short piece of insulation over the copper wire to prevent them from shorting out.  The next stage idea I did, was, I bent the longer piece of copper wire into a circle, and placed the grain of wheat bulb into the lamp, soldered the short leg to the casing.

I manufactured a loop to be soldered on top of the lamp which forms, shall we say, the positive side of the feed and the bottom loop forms the negative side of the feed to the bulb.

I then used the wire from an 'old' stripped down transformer to form the mast ropes which hold the lamp in place.  The mast rope that is connected to the top of the lamp becomes the positive feed and the mast rope that is connected to the bottom of the lamp becomes the negative feed.

Ive attached a sketch (scribble) to try and explain these plust a bit of a blurred picture.

Hope this is of some help.

Also, there is a certain Company if you are quick and spring into ACTion  ;) who produce a unit to make these lamps actually flicker.

If you only want one flickering lamp, Wilkinsons, and no doubt other stores, are selling flickering nightlights. These cost 99p each and I am sure could be used - not tried to dismantle one yet as I think they are an integral part of our Christmas decorations  ::) They claim to be LEDs and are powered by a 3v CR2032 battery. Picture to follow.

Hi Barrie, I tried one of those 'electronic tea lights', the LED was very directional but not very bright at all.

On my Tug I used another method the mast is made of brass tube slide fit with the last section having a spring in side to keep the mast guys tight the power to the oil lights is run up the guide wires on eather side of the light ( bit like modern cable lights in houses)

the only hard part at 1/30 scale is the isolators on the positive side these where turned from plastic and took longer than the rest put together but now finished you can move the lights up and down the mast I have yet to fit the cords that would do it on the 1/1 scale these will be put on after the mast is painted
Picture 1 is the mast in place

Picture 2  mast fitted to boat

Picture 3  shows the top the bushes are temp when finished a washer soldered on will replace them

Picture 4  shows the bottom with a pin in temp this will have a bolt in its place you can just see the insulators

Picture 5  underside of the lamps the positive was isolated with epoxy

Picture  6 shows the lights on there is another light that fits on the top and takes power from the piano wire

I did the main part of the work a couple of years ago hence the dulling of the brass the only thing I had to do to get it working was to clean the piano wire

Now that is a very neat idea Peter and beautifully done.  Some real food for thought there and a couple of new ideas to develop.

The guy holding the lamp is a really nice touch and one I haven't seen before.  Beautifully done as well.

I really like that model.
