Maxwell Hemmens Max V4 manuals
« on: May 22, 2024, 02:03:53 pm »

Hello everyone,
I am looking for the manuals for a Maxwell Hemmens Max V4 steam engine / steam system. Does anyone have these documents and would be willing to share them, ideally as a scanned copy? Thank you.

I have a set of 'V' Four Caton paperwork, I don't know how close they are.

Hello Bunkerbarge,
that would be a good start! From the look of the two machines, I think they should be largely identical.
And if someone on the forum can contribute the documents for the Max V4, then all the better.

I'll dig them out tomorrow and scan them.

Apologies for the delay, I've dug the manual out and, believe it or not the Operating Instructions I have are for the "Max V4". Can you send me your e-mail address in a PM? I also have a little booklet specifically on the Caton, which contains valve setting instructions so might also be useful.

Dear friends,
with the support of Bunkerbarge, I got my MAX V4 ready for operation and tested it extensively. The engine runs very well and both the oil pump and the water pump work well. The flow rate of the oil pump was set to ISO 680 steam oil. The only thing I have replaced is the original burner. I now use a ceramic burner, which is much quieter. And also slightly less power, but I reckon the evaporation rate of the boiler is still high enough to drive a large PropShop Steam Scale propeller at more than enough RPM.It really is an impressive piece of model steam equipment.
For your enjoyment, I have made a video of the test and posted it on YouTube. I hope you enjoy watching it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEvS3H9veR8
