That dodgy carpentry looks absolutely superb to me. I thought I could plank a m9del, but your work puts me to shame.
So good to have you back..

Footski and Ray - Great to hear from you both and thanks for the kind words.  I am so happy to be back building I can't explain it  :-)

So a bit more of an update - Today I cut the limber channel which is essentially a cut in each frame that allow the water to flow between them and to the ships pumps.  I've been putting this job off since I finished the framework as I think you only get one go at doing it.  I also shaped the frame spacers and they are shaped for exactly the same reason - just to allow water to get freely to the pumps.

She also got a good clean up inside and out and the port side was also finished with shellac

I fixed the broken counter timbers so they are now fine

The next job is to plank the stern vault - The timbers here have a shiplap joint to keep the sea out.  I've already made these timbers so they just require bending and fitting

Hopefully I'll have another update soon - Cheers all  - Mark  :-))

Some more done

Before I started the planking I just wanted to check the stern for squareness.  I did this because I fitted it a very long time ago when my measuring skills and equipment was not as good as today. It was only 1mm low on the port side so I sorted it out with a rasp

All of the planks on the vault are curved so I had to pre-bend the shiplap planks first and then get on with the fitting of them

The hardest plank was the last one as it's moulded and makes the difficult transition from the counter timbers to the stern planking.  I made a scraper out of an old Stanley blade and scraped the pattern

Fitting it was tricky and I lost some of its detail and sharpness in the process but I think it looks ok

I really like this side detail where you can see that the first 2 planks sit flush with the outer planking and the rest sit behind.  It's also the only place that you can see the shiplap joints too.

So I'm going to continue working on the outer of the stern working my way up.  So more mouldings to make and more pre-bending of planks too

Cheers Mark

Awesome as always Mark...!  And the moulding looks very good to me, did you use a grinding disk to shape the blade..?

Looks like the build slip is serving you well.

Hi David

Thanks mate and yes I did use a Dremel grinding wheel to cut the shape.  I clamped the blade into the vice on my milling machine and put the grinding disc into the quill.  It makes it much more controllable to cut the shape that you want.  I've been a bit busy making a heavy duty keel clamp too  {-)   Its total overkill but I can position the ship anywhere I like which helps a lot.

I put 4 threaded inserts into my bench so that its easily removable too

Cheers Mark

Now that clamp is a work of art.  Very nice.  And I suppose the boat's OK too...   :-))

I thought the same  {-)   I have discovered that there is nothing worse than chasing a model around a workbench.  It gets damaged and you end up having one hand holding the model and the other trying to do three things..........so overkill it was  %%

Your talents know no bounds. A superb clamp and a brilliant idea to use the blade for shaping the moulding..

Hi Footski - I was shown this technique by another builder and it makes the process of making shaped scrapers a lot easier.  I can turn the milling head on my mill horizontally but it would be just as easy with it in the vertical position

Hi Phil good to hear from you - I tend to research on the net quite a lot as I've discovered that most potential problems have been solved before.  So I look into what others have done and put my own spin on it.  You would not believe just how much I have learned and still learning from this forum.

You're right though - why rush?  Once it's finished the journey is over so just take your time and enjoy the journey.

You should see the jig I've just made for gluing the transom timbers together - its awesome  {-)

If I can I'll bring it down to Mayhem this year - I say this every year and something always rains on my parade and makes me unable to attend.

Hi All

Some more done and this time I'm working on the stern.  Firstly I started by making a rough copy of the carving that sits on the stern timbers.

I then did my best to carve it out - I'm no carver thats for sure but the end result isn't too bad but lacks some of the detail

I then made and glued together the stern timbers which are all curved.  I made a jig to achieve this and then got on with milling out the windows

The two parts glued together which pretty much completes the external part of the stern timbers

Tomorrow the fun starts as I need to bend and glue this to the counter timbers.  If it doesn't crack then all is good - if not its back to the drawing board

Cheers Mark

Best of luck with that bending and gluing. That will be a good test. Fingers crossed.

Cheers Footski - I'm glad to say that it turned out ok  :-) :-) :-)

I'm really pleased with the way the stern has turn out - its better than I thought it would be

I'm now working on the stern window frames and I need to keep the parallelogram shape through to the inside. So to achieve this I made some false windows to set the frames which worked quite well

Here's the upper and lower frames set but I still need to make the window cheeks to get a really good fit

So my next jobs are to finish the window frames and then work out the best way to make the windows so that they look as close to the drawings as possible

Cheers Mark  :-))

Thanks Brian

I've had a go at making the stern windows - A little tricky as they are parallelogram in shape and the openings are also made at an angle.  So first of all I marked the window out on a single piece of wood.

I then set the mill and using a 1mm end mill I very carefully cut the segments out

The result is ok it just needs a little cleaning up to make it a bit sharper

Here's the window just balanced in the ship

So thats one down and one to go!

That's a good way of opening out the window frames - excellent use of your mill.

Have another look at your photo though mate, there appears to be light showing through on the outer edge of the right hand window upright - or maybe I should have gone to specsavers?

Regards,

Ray.

Ah, sorry Mark, just re-read your comment vis frame just balanced in the boat.

Hi All

Another update on Le Rochefort - The stern is now closed off internally and the windows are fitted.  Each plank had to be sanded from a larger piece as they are all curved.  I did try bending them but got nowhere as being internal there's no where really to clamp them.  The hinges and closers are blackened brass

I still need to put the nails in the external planks but thats nice and easy.  I think my next jobs are to make the quarter deck beams, beam supports and water ways.

Cheers Mark  :-) :-)

Excellent work - But - is covering all of the back hiding the work underneath, I thought you may have left the half of the ship that is not covered to show the inside construction, I understand the decking in the hold acts as structural but this part ?

Hi guys - thanks for the comments  :-))

warspite - you are right I have completely covered the counter timbers and I was unsure whether or not to do this.  In the end I just thought that it would be nicer just to close it off and complete the planking across it.  I found this internal planking quite hard to do and actually it was easier just to go straight across.  In fact internal planking is harder than outside planking which was a surprise to me.  Don't worry though there will be plenty of the ship to see even with the quarter deck in place

cheers Mark
