Lots of photos of the real thing at Canadianairboats.com. You don't need a step, but to make them turn properly you need hard chine forrard, round bilge aft. See canadianairboats gallery.

Nope!

an "airscrew" (lets get pedantic :-)))  and in our case a fixed pitch Airscrew is designed to work in one particular direction of rotation only, the surfaces of each blade are curved and if you were to take a cross section through a blade it is usually an airfoil section just like a plane's wing (thicker near the leading edge, thinning to nowt at the trailing edge of the blade) so it produces the maximum amount of thrust as it screws through the air, like a wing produces lift.  if you run it in the wrong direction of rotation it will produce thrust (because it has a pitch) but it will be very inefficient.
now
lets look at an I.C. powered plane, engine facing forwards, prop at the front, a "normal" tractor prop is required say it runs anti clock.

that I.C. engine will only run in one direction of rotation (anti clockwise) so if you put it in a pushing configuration the tractor prop will be running backwards.. very inefficient  so you need a "pusher" prop designed to run backwards

in the case of our electric airboats we can reverse the rotation of the electric motor by swapping the supply leads  +/- over and it will run either clock or anti-clock rotation no problem   so if the motor shaft is facing forward use a standard tractor prop, if the shaft is facing aft take the standard tractor prop, keep it facing the same way as if it was on the front, put it on the motor, and reverse the polarity.....

and thats just how Dave's airboat is at the minute :-))

if you are still awake after that :}

can i please have some thunderbolts over Taylor park now! O0

seriously though... anyone who has had owt' ta do with aviation in an engineering sort of way (for the last 37years) can just look at a prop and read a lot of information about what it is fixed too!
db
The man said RUN. Props don't run..... motors do.....the rest of the explanation is fine  :}

thats good then , it would be rather embarassing to have made an air boat only to be stopped mid lake cos the pilots hair was entangled around the prop !  <:(

Well larry has got us all at it (making air boats I mean),
 I got photos and dimensions from the Alligator Tour site.
 You will have to work out your own way of building though.
 I used a sort of egg box type build for mine fitted with a 28/30/1270 brushless motor.
on a 8.4 NIMH battery.
Only tried it in the indoor test tank at the minute as I have yet to finish the cage framework.

Hi Stew ,just type in alligator tour airboats and their website will come up on screen. They do 2 sizes a 30" IC model
and a smaller 18" electric version. Very easy to make.

Skimmer 400 Series RDSMB 001..

Well went down to the pond today and saw one of the first completed builds by one of our members having a test run in the lake, this one is a bit heavier than it should be as not built from Balsa, I believe there is a second in developement for the races..

The Races we are having will be ruled that it must be no more than a 400 engine No Brushless and no Lipos, and the design must be true to the original. Originally I thought about 8 laps , Not so sure now, maybe 4 !!
We may move on to an open series type later.. :-))

Some pictures and Video  (Note to myself.. Do not talk while recording Doh..)

I would post a link to the product if the site was running.. but MMM do a air boat hull in vac formed styrene, there is talk of 'keeping to the plan' would this hull constitute keeping to the plan but with a pre formed hull?

@ around the £14 its not bad but not sure if its worth its value given its only 1.5mm thick  {:-{

Hi all,
I made one last year but a slightly modified version with pusher prop & brushless motor with twin air rudders. I found it worked like the real thing
